On Valentine’s Day I found myself binging chocolate covered strawberries and episodes of Hulu’s new Muslim Matchmaker. Myself and a few other curious Muslim women watched nervously as the complexities of Muslim courtship was on full display on reality television. For me, the show was of particular interest. Why? Because Muslim dating and marriage is my thing.
I’ve been writing about the problems that plague the Muslim marriage market for the last five years so naturally I was excited to see the topic I study and ruminate on find it’s way to mainstream media for the world to pick apart and prod. If you haven’t seen the show, no worries. I will warn you before I give a spoiler. This blog post will stay high level and reveal my overall take-aways from the show, including why I’m proud of the producers/matchmakers, and why I continue to worry about the future state of marriage for Muslims in America.
